Gwinnett County Public Schools desires to have the best-qualified teaching and non-teaching substitutes to serve the students of our school district. Teaching substitutes are needed for all grade levels and subject areas. Non-teaching substitute areas include paraprofessional, custodial, school food service, clerical, clinic workers, and sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired.
Requirements for Substitute Teacher Applicants
Substitute applicants must first be approved by Human Resources. To begin this process, applicants must have a completed application on file in Human Resources. Please see Career Opportunities to determine how best to begin your application process as an internal or external applicant.
Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- Valid or expired professional teaching certificate.

- Completion of at least two (2) years of study (60 semester or 90 quarter hours) at an accredited institution of higher learning. Copies of transcripts from each college/university attended are required.
After approval by Human Resources, applicants must complete an interview process and Substitute Training Workshop. Those who hold a valid or expired professional teaching or paraprofessional certificate or who have completed their student teaching with Gwinnett County Public Schools are exempt from the Substitute Training Workshop requirement but still must participate in the interview process. All substitute employees are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal record check.
