    As part of the system's comprehensive assessment program, Georgia students in grades 1-8 take the state-required Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests or CRCT in reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. Students in grades 3-8 also are assessed in science and social studies. For promotion, the state requires students in grade 3 to pass the reading CRCT. Georgia students in grades 5 and 8 are required to pass the reading and math CRCT subtests.

    Gwinnett's Gateway tests measure how well students are learning the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS). Gateway tests are used in certain grades to determine whether or not students are prepared to go on to the next grade level. In addition, high school students must pass the high school Gateway to earn a diploma.

    These tests— when used with homework, projects, classwork, and teacher-developed tests— help parents and teachers measure student achievement for a particular year. For some grade levels, a passing score on these tests is a promotion requirement. Visit the links below for more information on promotion requirements for students in these grades.

    *Note: For 2008–09, GCPS’ Math Reasoning Test will be administered to 4th and 7th graders in the spring but will not be used for promotion, giving students and teachers one more year to become more familiar with the open-ended testing format. This is an adjustment to the promotion flyers produced for those grade levels earlier in the school year (see above).

    High School
    In order to earn a regular Gwinnett County high school diploma, students must:
    • Learn the AKS to pass each class and earn the necessary Carnegie units (class credits);
    • Pass Gwinnett's high school Gateway, which is first administered in the 10th grade (coming soon: 2008-09 Gateway flyer); and
    • Pass Georgia's High School Graduation Tests (content-area subtests and writing test), which are administered in the 11th grade.
    • Fulfill Georgia's Graduation Requirements.
