2008-09 Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Gateway tests
Gwinnett schools measure student learning of the school system’s curriculum— the Academic Knowledge and Skills or AKS— in a number of ways. In Gwinnett, some statewide assessments serve as Gateway tests in certain grades to determine whether or not students are prepared to go on to the next grade level. For students in grades 1-8, Gwinnett measures students’ learning in the areas of reading, English/language arts, and mathematics, using the state’s Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT). Students in grades 3-8 also take CRCT subtests in science and social studies. In addition, students in grades 3, 5, and 8 take state writing tests. See the information below regarding Gateway tests at each grade level.

*Note: For 2008–09, GCPS’ Math Reasoning Test will be administered to 4th and 7th graders in the spring but will not be used for promotion, giving students and teachers one more year to become more familiar with the open-ended testing format. This is an adjustment to the promotion flyers produced for those grade levels earlier in the school year.

    4th Grade Gateway
In Gwinnett, the CRCT is a Gateway test for promotion for 4th graders. To earn promotion to 5th grade, Gwinnett students must meet on-grade-level expectations on each portion of the CRCT.

High school students take a number of tests toward graduation requirements, including the Gwinnett-developed high school Gateway writing test.

    High School Gateway
Given for the first time in 10th grade, the high school Gateway assesses students’ language arts, science, and social studies knowledge and skills. Students write two essays— one on a science topic and one on a social studies topic. In writing his response, a student must use his own knowledge about the topic and pull information from documents that are provided. The essays are rated in four areas— science knowledge and concepts, language arts/writing skills on the science topic, social studies knowledge and concepts, and language arts/writing skills on the social studies topic.
