Recent State and National Honors and Recognitions...

Students

48 GCPS seniors were named 2009 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists through the National Merit Scholarship Program.

A Duluth High graduate was awarded the Yoshiyama Award for Exemplary Service to the Community, a prestigious national award given to only ten students from across the country.

A Parkview High student achieved a perfect score on a college entrance exam.

Mill Creek students were named AAAAA Girls Golf champions, Competition Cheerleading champions , and Softball champions.

A Peachtree Ridge High student was the 1st place winner of the Fire Safety Essay contest sponsored by the Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.

A Maxwell High School of Technology student was accepted into the Mercedes--Benz Universal Technical Institute.

A Parkview ROTC Cadet won a national championship in varsity-level orienteering.



Staff

A Shiloh High Visual Arts teacher won the Elizabeth Catlett Printmaking Award at the 2008 New Power Generation Juried Art Exhibition.

A Nesbit Elementary teacher was recognized by the Association of Teacher Educators, Georgia Unit.

GCPS teachers from Parsons Elementary and Trickum Middle were selected to participate in the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Teacher Academy.

A Margaret Winn Holt Elementary teacher was selected for a Teaching Ambassador Fellowship by the U.S. Secretary of Education.

A Norcross High counselor was featured in American School Board Journal magazine for her article "Race Against Time," which highlights the school's ESOL program.

A Sweetwater Middle teacher was chosen to participate in the Northrop Grumman Foundation Weightless Flights of Discovery program for math and science teachers.



School

Parkview High students enrolled in the school’s MCJROTC (Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) unit earned the school a designation as a “Naval Honors School.

Media programs at Meadowcreek Elementary, Mill Creek High, and North Gwinnett High were named Exemplary Library Media Programs of the Year by the State Department of Education.

A number of GCPS staff, PTA units, and PTA leaders were awarded first or second place at the state level in a variety of categories at the 2008 Summer Conference and Leadership Training of the Georgia PTA.

GCPS community schools received a state grant for driving simulators from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

GCPS earned five Awards of Excellence in the National School Public Relations Association's 2008 Publications and Electronic Media Contest.
